I listened to the Dune audiobook in June, in preparation to rewatch David Lynch’s 1984 film and then watch Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film.
The audiobook is easily one of the best produced audiobooks I’ve listened to, including a simple score, sound effects, great narration, and a full cast of voice actors. I highly recommend the audiobook.
Lynch’s film has not aged well, feels like a complete mess, and truncates the book too much. I am a David Lynch fan and am no Frank Herbert expert, but I never felt a connection with any of the characters or the story.
On the other hand, Villeneuve’s version does justice to the book’s narrative and is the filmmaking I’ve come to expect from him. I’m very much looking forward to Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and plan to listen to Dune Messiah ahead of the probable Part Three.
